Hiking
Passing right by the White Hart Inn is the Appalachian Trail.  The "AT" runs from Georgia to Maine, highlighting the best mountain peaks and most scenic views along the east coast. Whether you’re taking a day, weekend or weeklong trek, the White Hart offers a special weekday hiker rate. Local state parks, the Sharon Audubon and privately owned Bartholomew’s Cobble also offer great hiking opportunities.

Bear Mountain
At 2,380ft, Bear Mountain is the tallest peak in Connecticut. This 5.5-mile hike is long and difficult but very rewarding. You should be in fairly good shape to attempt Bear Mountain. Just remember, the turtle wins the race. Go slow and stop often and this summit is surmountable. From the White Hart Inn, travel north on Rt. 41 for 3.1 miles. The dirt parking lot is on your left and marked as “Under mountain Trail.” Trail maps are available at the trail entrance. Allow about 4 hours for this hike.

Lion’s Head
Lion’s Head is more of a family hike, albeit an active family. This hike is topped by beautiful northeastern views of Twin Lakes, the Berkshires and Litchfield hills. From Salisbury, take Factory Street, which is located next to Town Hall. This road changes into Bunker Hill and will take you up most of the mountain. The road splits twice, both times stay to your right. At the end of the paved road there will be a large field on your right. The dirt parking lot is at the end of the field. The trail leaves directly from the parking lot. Allow 45 minutes to reach the summit.

Bartholomew’s Cobble
Bartholomew’s Cobble is located in Sheffield, Massachusetts. This private reserve has approximately 5 miles of moderate hiking trails. The cobble is mostly limestone and marble, which alters the soil and creates a unique environment that supports a wide variety of flora. You can either hike up Hurlburt’s Trail for a scenic overview of the area, or hike the low lying trails along the Housatonic. There is an admission fee. Dogs are not allowed.

Kent Falls State Park
Kent Falls State Park truly is for the whole family. There is a wide meadow with grills, picnic tables and bathrooms. The most spectacular section of the falls is located near the parking lot. There are newly renovated hiking trail if some of the family would like to explore more of the park. Kent Falls conveniently located on Rt. 7 in Kent.

Bash Bish Falls
This state park has the highest single drop waterfall in lower New England. The hike is short and the incline is moderate. This is a good hike for beginners or families with children. From route 22, take route 344 east for 2 miles, (this becomes Falls Rd). The trailhead and parking lot will be on your right.

Sharon Audubon
The Audubon is a nature sanctuary and wildlife preserve with beautiful hiking trails. Also take advantage of their excellent educational programs for children.  Look out for the beaver dams along your walk!
